👋🏾 Hey, everyone! It's that time of year again! Time for fall festivals, hay rides, pumpkin spice lattes, apple cider, beautiful cool weather, and the holidays! 🍁 I wanted to show my current crochet students a quick project they can make for autumn, and of course I had to choose a pumpkin! It's fun, easy, repetitive, and if you're newer to crochet, you'll learn a few new skills and techniques in the process.
I wanted to share this cute little pumpkin pattern with the world, so I've created a free video tutorial and written pattern to everyone can follow along. If you want to support me further, feel free to purchase the downloadable PDF (ad-free) version --> https://www.thestitchqueencrochet.com/product-page/beginner-pumpkin-crochet-pattern-includes-video-tutorial
This is my favorite season, and one of my favorite beginner patterns. Probably because it reminds me of my super-easy beanie pattern! I could make those for days :)
But, without further ado, let's jump right into the pattern! Here's what you need to get started:

Got everything you need? Great! Let’s get started!

Make a slip knot and put it on your hook.

Chain 20 or a chain that is 5 and ½ inches.

Row 1: In the second chain from your hook, do a single crochet. Then single crochet in the remaining 18 stitches. Turn your work. (Stitch Count - 19)

Row 2: Chain 1(this does not count as a stitch, make sure that you don’t accidentally crochet into it). Single crochet in the back loop of every stitch. Turn your work. (Stitch Count - 19)

Row 3 - 30: Repeat Row 2 until you have 30 rows, or until your crochet measures 9 inches long.

Sewing your pumpkin sides together:
Option 1: Slip stitch your first and last row together, then fasten off leaving a long tail to sew the top of your pumpkin together. If you don’t know how to do that, go to Option 2.
Option 2: After you finish Row 30, fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing the sides of your pumpkin together. Put your yarn through a darning needle.
Now fold your pumpkin in half, so that your first and last row are on top of each other.
Sew each stitch from Row 30 to the bottom of the adjacent chains on Row 1.
I like to sew through the back loop of Row 30 and then into the bottom of the chains. This creates a ridge where you are sewing it together so it matches the rest of the ridges you created when you were crocheting in the back loops. But for the first one, make sure you go through both loops of your stitch or your work may come apart. Then after that first one, you can sew into the back loops. (The image below shows me going through the back loop on the first one, don’t do that, lol).

After you are done, tie a knot and sew in your ends.

Sewing the top of the pumpkin:
If you slip stitched (Option 1) and have the long tail at the top of your pumpkin, put that on your darning needle. If you did Option 2, cut a long string of yarn and put it on your needle. I cut one that’s way too long, but I’ll use it for the top and bottom of my pumpkin.

Option 1: Now, you are going to do a running stitch in all the single crochet at the top of your pumpkin.
Going in one single crochet (now your needle is in the inside of your work), then inserting your needle through the stitch next from the inside of your work to the outside again.
Option 2: You can also sew your needle through each ridge.

Continue until you get to where you started. (if you did Option 2 of sewing your pumpkin sides together, make sure to hold on to the tail where you started sewing the top of your pumpkin together. You do this to make sure it doesn't slide out while you pull in the next step).

Now, pull your string to make the top of your pumpkin closed! If you feel like there is still a hole, sew across it a few times at different angles to close it up. I did this.
Tie a knot, then insert your needle through the middle hole of the top of your pumpkin, and out the bottom of the pumpkin.
If you did option 2 of sewing the sides together, sew in that shorter yarn tail you were holding when we pulled the top together. Then put your darning needle back on your longer tail.
Now sew the bottom together the same way you sewed the top.

Before you pull it closed, stuff your pumpkin with fluff or scrap yarn.

Now pull it closed. If you like the pumpkin as is, sew over the hole in different directions from one side to another to close it, fasten off, and weave in your ends.

If you would like to scrunch/squish it, sew over the hole to fully close it, then insert your needle in the middle of your pumpkin and pull it out the middle of the other side.
Go back and forth a few times, pulling tight each time to set the scrunch. Then tie a knot and sew in your ends.

The Stem:
Using your green yarn, make a slip knot and put it on your hook.
Chain 10.

In the remaining 9 chains, single crochet 4 in each of them. (Stitch Count - 36)

Your stem will start to curl. When you sc 4 in all 9 stitches, fasten off, leaving a long tail to sew it onto your pumpkin.

Put the long tail through your darning needle and put your needle through the top of the pumpkin, and through to the bottom.

Ad
Insert your needle through a stitch close to where it came out from and go back to the top and through the bottom of your stem to make sure it is attached well. (Feel free to repeat these steps one or twice to really secure your stem).

Then tie a knot, fasten off, and sew in your ends. And you're done!
If you want to purchase the PDF Downloadable Pattern, you can here:
Customizing your own sized pumpkin:
If you want a taller looking pumpkin. 1. Do less rows. 2. Chain more at the beginning of the pattern.
If you want a wider and shorter looking pumpkin: 1. Do more rows. 2. Chain less at the beginning of the pattern.
